The plow is on! Plus, 2 month review.
After having the machine for a few months, I have some initial thoughts. Also, I was able to finally mount the plow, and wanted to give some feedback on how that went.

The Polaris Ranger was replaced with
Переглядів 19 тис.Рік тому
I figured it was time to upgrade to a heated cab this winter. The Polaris Ranger has been sold, and a 2022.5 Can-Am Defender HD 10 limited has taken its place. I had used the Ranger almost everyday on our property, and it was awesome for pushing snow with the Boss V plow. I had zero issues with that machine, I hope to say the same about this one. I'm ready for a fun fall, and hopefully a snowy ...

I added a 2019, Can Am Outlander 850 max XT, to the family. Fun, fun, fun, but......engine issues after ONLY 4 hrs, and 40 miles. Not cool.

I finally found time to give an update on the Ranger, and answer some questions regarding the Boss plow. It's a little long winded, but I hope it helps.
Polaris Ranger 900 pushing heavy, Jan snow

Just had 7-8 inches of wet, January snowfall. A little better point of view to see the Ranger, and Boss plow at work. Definitely heavy, but both the plow and Ranger worked great. Sorry, the video is a little longer then I intended.

Quick informative video of my new 2013 Ram 2500 with a few aftermarket installs. 68 RFE transmission, with engine ratings of 370 hp, and 800 lb/ft of torque. Just my thoughts and feedback on the new ram nothing more.
Nice setup. What year is your Ranger?
I just put one on a 2024 North Star xp 1000 not the split plow hoping it last good
That's S.I.C.K , I have the 21 Can-Am six-seater awesome unit I would just add a little 2 or 3in lift kit on that one.
amazing .... sold me! Hows this work on a gravel road?
You still like the defender?
I do. I pushed snow all winter with it, without issue, with the big boss v plow. Nice warm cab, and no issues thus far. How about you?
@@macgyver515 yeah! They are so nice to have. Happy to hear it’s treating you well buddy
Nice machine.👍. I ordered the hd9 cab model. I tried out a defender and really like how it rides and the quiet cab. I currently run a 2017 commander 1000xt. I have to use ear plugs even after installing noise and heat dampening material under the engine compartment plastics. The heat from that engine is almost unbearable in the summer. I don’t ride it on hot days. It’s a great winter machine lol.
How do you like your defender limited now that you've had it a few months ?? Better than ranger north star ?? Considering buying one or the other
They both have their pros and cons. The four wheel drive system in the Polaris is better, but the can am does fine for what I do. The cab is bigger in the defender, and the interior is a little better, too, in my opinion. The Polaris come with led lights, and a radio. That's not a big deal for me, since I add my own light bar anyway. It was fantastic pushing snow this winter. The heat is amazing, and the AC worked well in the summer. I think the HVAC is very good in both. The Can-Am has less squeaks and rattles. However the brakes do tend to squeal, which can be addressed. Overall I'm quite happy with it, but it's definitely a luxury UTV. Neither one is an ideal trail rig. I use mine around the property first and foremost, and a little bit on the trails. Not sure this helped, but good luck on your search.
Ya thanks man. I like both. Heard the can am is less noisy inside the cab which is a plus for me. They added factory Led lights and 30 inch tires now, I test drove one the other day. My brother has a polaris but it's an older model so hard to compare
Don't get me wrong, both of them have road noise, they are not like a car obviously. But they're still pretty fancy for a UTV. I hang on to my stuff for a long time, so I plan on taking care of it.
Ya I appreciate the input. It's hard to find someone who has owned/driven both the polaris and can am so any insight is useful !
Did the S3 springs add height? Thought I saw they add a 1-2” in overall ride height? Wonder how that affected plow angle. Have the same machine in a crew cab and picking up boss v plow tomorrow and installing myself! Seen a bunch of guys just cranking the stock springs to stiff. May try that first 🤷♂️ Did you make mounting brackets for wiring harnesses or did they come with it? Thanks!
Yes, the new springs did add some ride height, which does impact the plow angle some. I did leave out the aluminum spacer block, which was included for the BACK. It did take some adjustment to get everything set up, but the factory springs are extremely soft, resulting in a ton of body roll. Yes, you can crank down the factory springs, but I wanted a solution to the body roll year-round. Are you asking about the wiring harness for the plow? If so, yes, it did come with a mounting bracket. I drilled two small holes in the dash, and installef the mounting bracket, to accommodate the harness plug for the plow controller. It looks a lot cleaner. If you include your email, I can try to send you a close-up picture.
How do you like those mirrors?
I like the size, and the solid construction. However, a small spring is used at the hinge point (weird). It makes for more movement in the mirror than I would like. A little reinforcement at the spring helped. The engineering at that point is weird.
@@macgyver515 Meaning the whole mirror vibrates, or the whole mirror moves easily and doesn't stay in place?
@@jeffvry4187 The mirror(s) vibrate at higher speeds, but stays in place. Since I use mine at mostly slower speeds, work on the property, or mild trail riding, it's fine for my needs. I like the larger mirror. If you do mostly aggressive riding, or riding on a lot of tight trails, you may want to look at something else.
Do u no part number on mirrors
Can you do a video or comment on the rear lights, I have seen this a few times and have a '23 coming in a few weeks and want to add this as it seems like the perfect spot for them.
Here is a link to a video of the same lights, link, and brief description by another UA-camr. Hope this helps. They are a great add-on. ua-cam.com/video/-exwLbVqHBA/v-deo.html
@@macgyver515 This is the one that I watch, thanks, seems like a no brainer update.
@@puzle9 You will need a one inch hole saw, NOT the larger hole saw, since you will be removing the light from the supplied frame/holder. Use the supplied holder as a template for the screws. Just take your time, measure twice and cut once. I removed the side panels for better access. Only five screws, I believe. Good luck with rig
@@macgyver515 Thanks for taking the time to reply. I plan on doing some mods and hope to video document, turn signals, horn, auto reverse lights via diag port.
Very nice, what size rims and tires?!
2022/2022.5 have 27 inch tires, on 14 inch rims. 2023 models come with 30 tires from the factory.
If you had good luck with the Polaris, why not stay with Polaris? Looks cheap compared to the Polaris Ranger. Like they took a bunch of left-over body panels and threw them together. Also, you need to adjust the plow more. The middle is digging into the ground and the edges are off the ground. That will wear the center of the cutting edge out and push hard.
I received optimal money for it, and the heated cab is a nice addition for winter plowing. The plow lays flat when it's not in V mode, which it is not in 95% of the time, when plowing. V Mode is only really needed for initial break- through of bigger drifts. We will see how it pans out.
@@macgyver515 $900 Heater kit and $900 soft doors and your Ranger would be nice and warm for plowing. I am guessing that is a lot cheaper than buying a new machine. All plows will sit flat on the ground in straight mode. The plow frame is supposed to be horizontal with the ground. With your plow in V mode you can just see it's out of adjustment easier. When your plow is adjusted right it will sit flat in v mode, scope mode and when it straight and angled. I did a video on my v plow on my truck explaining all this but I can't find it on my channel. Hopefully you understand what I mean.
@@mossman381 I optimized my resale on the Ranger, got a new machine, and with it, a five year warranty. No doubt more than just adding doors, and heater kit. I have no regrets. It was a very good machine for the 6 yrs I owned it. I understand your description of the plow adjustment, in the v position. The flexibility to adjust the plow is lessened on some UTV's, compared to a truck, especially with a larger brush guard. The only way to get the plow completely flat, in the v position, on this particular machine, is to remove the brush guard. As I noted in the video, if I drop the plow down any lower on the mounting bracket, the plow tower DOES hit the brush guard, as I've already found out prior to posting the video. I have maxed out adjustability on the plow too, and have to accept it will not lay perfectly flat in the v position. I'm willing to accept that, in order to keep the brush guard in place year-round. It also gives me a good mounting location for the front LED lights. We will see how plowing goes this winter. If there are any significant issues, I may remove the brush guard next winter, if needed.
@@macgyver515 You could make or have made bracket mounting extensions for that lower plow bracket out of flat bar stock and move the attachment point forward without having to raise the plow angle up. How is the leg room and seating comfort compared to the Polaris? I would probably own a Northstar if there was more room in the cab but as it is it's just too cramped and uncomfortable for me. I keep telling my dealer to twist his Polaris reps arm into making the cab larger for us grown up farm boys lol. Thanks for the honest review.
I thought about that. After I posted this video, I was able to move it back one more hole, which helped out. I have plowed twice, now, and it works fine.
I would highly recommend tire chains if you haven't already tried them. I went with the v-bar diamond style tire chains on my Grizzly 700, it's night and day difference.
I have had great luck for the last 6 years without them, hopefully that continues.
Can you lock the doors?
Unfortunately no. One of the negatives about the new door design, and a big oversight on their part. Otherwise I'm happy with the doors.
Did it come with the side mirrors?
It did not. They gave me a 20% discount on the mirrors when I bought the machine. I purchased them from the parts store.
Whered your can-am badge go off both your mirrors?
There was no badging on them when I purchased from the dealership.
@@macgyver515 Might wanna check on that suppose to have a canam badge on the back of them mirrors
Do you happen to have the link for those rigid back up lights? Just got a defender limited and wanting to do the same. Any tips would be greatly appreciated
RIGID INDUSTRIES Ignite Backup Kit Black Flood Flush Mount: Mounting Accessories For Offroad Use a.co/d/2FtuffH
You are going to remove the Ridgid light from its housing, and not use it. You will need to drill a one inch hole for the light, and use the housing as a template for the screw layout. You will need to trim it a little to lay it flat for tracing. I then bought a toggle switch off Amazon as well, and put it next to the LED light switch. It's not difficult, it just takes time. Good luck.
@@macgyver515 Thanks for the info/tips! Really appreciate it
Awesome, I have one on order. You say you had no issues with the polaris. What about cold weather starting? you did not mention that. That is the biggest reason I did not even look at polaris. it can hit -10 to -30 here in the winter and I towed my buddys polaris to shore a number of times with my 2005 can am
The Polaris was fantastic starting in the cold. Same battery for 6 years, no issues.
That thing is sweet!!
Beautiful machine! This is exactly what I want once we move to Montana. Looking forward to your next video.
That’s a nice color combo, you’ll be enjoying that in the winter.
....recently came across a video of paint drying. Think I found that more enjoyable.
Nice set up. Love the play house.
Enjoyed the video, thanks for taking the time.
What’s the price of that plow setup?
Could you add a link or description for the control harness mount you used? I have an identical setup and my harner wires are loosely run.
Can you set the plow on some Harbor Freight dollies when disconnecting so that you can roll it into place to hook it back up? Must be hard to see those small slots when hooking up
Love it!!! Great job!!!! Looking to get one soon!!! Would you want full doors???
I'm trying to figure out what to buy. I have a tractor and a ranger. How come you decided to plow with the ranger instead of the tractor???
The ranger is so much faster, and maneuverable. I have a 50 horsepower tractor I use to stack up the snow when it builds up, or if we have a massive snow like we had in December. We got 36 in in less than 12 hours, way too much for the ranger, but the tractor with chains did fine.
@@macgyver515 makes sense. Thank you
Do u have a radio and a dump body
Dump bed, yes. No radio
Whoa, just got my quote for this plow (no frills full hydraulic ) $4500 . By comparison, the Moose brand straight blade, all manual pivot direction control is about $850...
Much more expensive then when I bought mine. $3300 fully installed. Not cheap, but I am on year five, and it has worked flawlessly so far.
Man that Boss unit does work. Having the hydraulic control is sweet. I wish I was plowing on asphalt in stead of gravel. Pretty challenging, especially with a non-hydraulic straight blade.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks. I agree with your statement of plowing in grave, not fun. The hydraulic vs using a winch, is night and day different, in a good way.
I need this but I also need to lift boulders, gravel and things with some sort of bucket. Is this possible?
Too many snow lines, it looks like you have to go over the same spot multiple times
Some doors would be what you really need to keep snow rain wind away
Nice
And the plow looks like the best way to go or hydraulic that plow much cost five grand
I picked the same plow up for $3500 used. Dealer quote was $4800ish
How warm is it in the can with the windshield on if you buy the whole ProStar from the factory that scene is big money please advise if you like the way it is set up if you’re cold
Wtf you do for a living😉
Nice set up but its a little heavy, I can see you going through bealing. Driveline replacement lower a arms
Bealing? Nope. Five years, and zero issue with the front end, or drivetrain..
@@macgyver515 cool then awesome
This was great. Thanks for all the great information and tour!!!!!
Nice kit my dude
Thanks for the informative video. Looking at getting this model plow for a Honda Pioneer 1000. Quick question. I will be plowing a gravel driveway and road. With shoes on the plow, due to the gravel, how close to the ground can I realistically expect it to plow? I know it won’t be all the way down like with an asphalt driveway. Thanks.
A few inches to be safe, and avoid pushing the stones/gravel.
Loud AF
If I got one it would be
Terrible audio
Dude, it was shot on a cell phone in a garage, it's not IMAX.
HAHA.. Audio sounds great to me. Maybe you need hearing aides...
Thank you for some very good videos on your Ranger and Boss plow set up. Just traded my 09 Ranger with a regular snow plow in on a 2020 Ranger XL 1000 with the Boss plow. Learned a lot watching your videos. I plan on using snow machine dolly's to move the plow around when not in use and to make it easier to line it up when putting it on. The weight in the bed will be 5 gallon buckets filled with sand. Just something easier and won't be getting wet from any snow.. Thank you again for your videos and ideas.
You are welcome. It's a great set up for snow removal. The best advice I can give is always push in low, and avoid the temptation for a lift or bigger tires. Just my two cents. And of course the ballast it super helpful. Good luck with your rig
@@macgyver515 Low range is all i ever used while pushing snow with my 09 Ranger. If and when we get some snow I'll let you know how it goes. One thing I,m looking forward to is being able to back drag snow from around garage doors. Take care..
I must say for not liking doing videos and saying you're not very good at it.....I LOVE this video and feel you are VERY good at it. Thank you!
Awesome set up man! Great vid.
Any wear and tear to date? Any issues come up yet on either the plow or the ranger as a result of plowing in general or the heavy boss? I just bought a 2020 1000 with the 72” Polaris hydraulic plow
No issues. I have had normal wear and tear on the cutting edge of the plow. But not bad. Both have been great over the past four years. My best advice is regular maintenance on both, greasing annually, plow in low (always), and always plow with stock size tires. If the ranger is too high (tires/lift) it will mess with the angle, and put more strain on the front. It will dig, rather then smoothly push. In my opinion anyway, for what it's worth. Good luck.
